When Should Your Child's Eyes Be Checked?

All children should have their eyes examined by an eye doctor at least by the time they enter school. The American Optometric Association, in fact, suggests that children have their first regular eye exam at 6-months. Follow-up exams should be at 3-years old and again just before starting school. If a problem is found, of course, more frequent care may be necessary.

Signs that your infant may have a vision problem:

- A droopy eye lid
- Eyes that are not straight
- Poor focus on objects after 3-months of age
- A family history of serious eye problems
- Excessive tearing

Your child may have an eye problem if he/she:

- Complains of double vision or headaches
- Complains of blurry vision
- Squints to see
- Blinks their eyes excessively
- Has a red eye
